Complete answer:
The term "Non-Alignment" was conceived by V K Menon in his speech at the UN in 1953. The same speech was later used by Jawahar Lal Nehru (Indian Prime Minister) during his speech in 1954 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In a speech given by Nehru, he described the five pillars to be used as a guide for Sino-Indian relations. These principles later served as the basis of the Non-Aligned Movement.
Jawaharlal Nehru was the one who started the Non-Alignment Movement. The five principles were:
- Mutual respect for each other's territorial integrity and sovereignty is our concern
- Mutual non-aggression
- Mutual non-interference in domestic affairs
- Equality and mutual benefit
- Peaceful co-existence
When India got Independence in 1947, the world was divided into two hostile groups viz., Anglo- American bloc and Russian bloc. Nehru who proposed the idea of Non- Alignment believed that India should keep itself circulating from the struggle between these two blocs. Thus, the main concern of the policy is to not support or go against any of the two-military power.
India continues to practice a policy to maintain sovereignty and oppose imperialism. The movement attempted to create a path in world politics. This movement policy was applied to India's relations with countries outside South Asia. This moment shared India's concerns and importance about the military confrontation between the superpowers and the influence of the former colonial powers too.
Note:
Jawahar Lal Nehru was the one behind Non-alignment. Non-alignment of India shared India's concerns to different aspects. India got an independent path in world politics in a very good position.
