Let us discuss rearing of animals and hence pastors.Agriculture is practised in only ten percent of the total land area of Africa, which is not sufficient to feed a huge continent. Failure of rains for many years has resulted in droughts.Sheep rearing on a commercial scale is practised in the Velds of South Africa. They yield excellent wool. Sheep are also reared in the East African highlands and in the Mediterranean region.Camels are reared in the Sahara desert, where they are the most important beasts of burden.These are found in the south-eastern part of the plateau, particularly in South Africa. They are known as the Velds or Veldts. Here the summers are hot and winters are cold. Rainfall is quite low, but it occurs both in summer and in winter.
Natural vegetation: The Velds are treeless regions and are not enough for trees to grow. The grass is shorter and softer than the Savanna grass. These grasslands provide excellent pastures that support a number of livestock.
