- A blood type which is also known as a blood group is a categorization of blood, depending upon the presence and absence of antibodies and inherited antigenic material on the surface of red blood cells . These antigens might be proteins, carbohydrates, glycoproteins, or glycolipids, based on the blood group system.
- The two most significant blood group systems are ABO and Rh type. They decide someone's blood type that is A, B, AB, and O, with a negative or positive null representing the RhD status for suitability in blood transfusion.
- Blood group AB persons have both A and B antigens on the exterior of their RBCs and their blood plasma does not hold any antibodies against either A or B antigen.
- Blood group A individuals contain the A antigen on the surface of their RBCs and blood serum composed of IgM antibodies against the B antigen.
- Individuals with Blood group B have the B antigen on the surface of their RBCs and the blood serum containing IgM antibodies against the A antigen.
- Persons bearing Blood group O do not have either A or B antigens on the surface of their RBCs and their blood serum contains IgM anti-A and anti-B antibodies.
Note: Individuals with group AB blood can receive blood from any group but they are not able to donate blood to any group other than AB. Because of this characteristic feature they are known as universal recipients. Type O individuals are able to receive blood only from a group O individual but they can donate blood to individuals of any ABO blood group. So they are known as universal donors.
