Complete answer: The sun rays fall on the earth at the same timer on land and the surrounding water bodies. However, the land is a good conductor of heat and hence is heated up more quickly than the water bodies such as the sea. This leads to the warming up air above land whereas the air above water bodies is cooler as compared to that on the land. Since hot air is less dense and moves up, the cooler air from the water bodies moves towards land to take its place and the land becomes cool. The sunrays again heat up that air and the same cycle repeats. This is known as the sea breeze which keeps the temperature in appropriate range during the day.
Similarly, the sea remains warmer during the night due to which the air above sea is warmer and rises up. the cooler air from the adjoining land blows towards the sea to take its place and hence the convection currents are set up. Also, in abroad sense, the monsoon winds can be regarded as land and sea breezes on a large scale which provide rainfall to the Indian subcontinent.
