To prohibit the hunting of wild animals, birds, etc. and to impose the proper punishment for such types of activities the Wild Life Protection Act was brought about by the Indian Parliament in 1972. At that time Mrs. Indira Gandhi was serving as Prime Minister of India. She was a central figure of the Indian National Congress and was the first female Prime Minister of Independent India.
The Wildlife protection act, 1972 involves a lot of rules and provisions in the form of schedules but it can be understood in simple terms as below –
The act imposes a ban on the trade or commerce in the scheduled animals and also provides legal powers to the concerned officers for giving appropriate punishment to the offenders. It has about 66 sections that are divided into seven chapters and six schedules and in each chapter and schedules, the provisions of penalty and punishment have been mentioned in detail for each type of offense related to the wild animals.

There was also a list of the endangered species of all the flora and fauna found in India and suggestions related to the establishment of new National Parks, Wildlife sanctuaries, etc. have also been mentioned.
