Wildlife, which is a part of the environment, is considered as the wealth of the nation. The wildlife protection act, 1972 empowers the governments to declare any area a wildlife sanctuary, national park or closed area. Objectives of the wildlife protection act includes to prohibit hunting of wild animals and birds, to provide security to the animal which are not under danger of becoming extinct, to delineate animals that can be hunted ( introduction of hunting license), to help cultivation and plant life, to give power to law to punish anybody who violates the act etc. Additionally, the act has made a list of endangered species and provides protection to them. It allows the trade of wildlife species only with license. Also it clearly defines the terms related to wildlife such as animal, vermin, hunting etc .According to the act, only four wild species, common crow, fruit bats, mice and rats are permitted to be hunted. There are 66 sections to the act. In 2002 , an amendment to the act came to existence which made punishment and penalty for the offence more strict.
