Biodiversity or simply called biological diversity. It refers to the variety of life that exists on earth which includes all the flora, fauna and including all the natural habitat. There are many threats to biodiversity which include climate change, pollution, habitat change, extinction of species, deforestation, global warming and greenhouse effect, over exploitation of the resources by the humans, decrease in the capacity of agricultural areas, leisure and tourism. Explanation of main threats: -
1) Pollution: Access of heavy metal, pesticides and other pollutants degrades biodiversity.
2) Climate change: Carbon emission, global warming, cutting of trees i.e., deforestation leads to loss of flora and fauna.
3) Decrease in the capacity of agricultural areas: Human beings for satisfying their greed destroying the natural habitat, fertile land for agriculture. All this leads to the less availability of less fertile land for agriculture and wildlife.
4) Leisure and tourism: The growth of the tourism industry is also a biggest threat to biodiversity. Though these things are helpful tools in building the best economy for the country. But on the other hand, the mass tourism industry exploiting the beautiful flora and fauna leading to the extortion of natural species on the earth.
Note:Species often become threatened or disappear when all this factor combines. The fragmentation of habitat leads to the decrease in the size of the population of natural species. Human interaction with biodiversity is the most important factor for the awful condition of biological diversity. World environment day is celebrated for encouraging awareness among the humans for the protection of the environment. The coronavirus pandemic also demonstrates the critical interdependence of human and nature.
