Hint: Reproduction is defined as a biological process in which an organism gives rise to young ones similar to itself. This process enables the continuity of the species, generation after generation. Reproduction is of two types: Asexual reproduction and Sexual reproduction. The organism habitat, internal physiology, and several other factors are also responsible for the reproduction of any organism.
Complete answer:
Sexual reproduction is the process of the development of new young ones through the formation of haploid gametes and during the process of fertilization, these gametes fuse to form the diploid zygote. Sexual reproduction is a complex and slow process as compared to asexual reproduction because these offspring are not identical to their parents. It is also known as amphimixis or syngenesis. It provides the organism with environmental adaptability, genetic variation and also helps in evolution. It increases the survival chances in the changing environment due to the crossing over of chromosomes during the process of meiosis.
Whereas in Asexual reproduction only a single parent involved reproduces the offspring’s and they are the exact copies of their parents because of this there are no chances of variations in progeny. They aren’t able to survive in a changing environment, so they adopt different processes which help them to survive but in these processes they are inactive, and not able to produce offspring. It is easy and fast but there is no genetic level of variation that occurs. So, it clarifies that sexual reproduction is better than asexual reproduction.
Fact: Sometimes organism is able to reproduce both by the sexual and asexual reproduction and examples are fungi and plants but rarely the animals.
Note:
Reproduction is not considered as a defining feature of a living organism due to infertile animals like mules, and infertile humans. Asexually produced organisms are morphologically and genetically similar and called clones. However, sexually produced organisms are not morphologically and genetically similar due to genetic recombination which plays an important role in evolution.
