Satpura hills are part of the Deccan plateau in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The hills stretch for about 560 miles (900 km) across the widest region of peninsular India, through the states of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The meaning of this range is "Seven Folds," that forms the watershed among the Narmada (north) and Tapti(south) rivers. Satpura range comprises a series of seven mountains, basically the word ‘Sat’ means seven and pura meaning mountains. It moves along in an east-west direction and south of the Vindhyas as well as in between the Narmada and the Tapi, that is almost parallel to these rivers. Few parts of the Satpuras have been folded as well as upheaved. These parts are termed as the structural uplift or 'horst'. The Narmada and the Tapti are the two main rivers which drain into the Arabian Sea. The Narmada river originates in the eastern side of Madhya Pradesh and flows towards the western side across the state, with the help of a narrow valley between the Vindhya Range and spurs of the Satpura Range.
