Hint: 1.Cancer is the condition including uncontrolled proliferation of cells. 2.Cancer cells can be benign or malignant.
Complete answer:
Cancer is a condition where a special type of cell divides in an uncontrolled manner and spreads throughout the body. These cells are called cancer cells and they are capable of reaching other parts of the body through lymph and blood. Tissues are made up of normal cells and when these cells cease to function in a normal manner they turn into cancer cells. Here the old cells do not die but grow in an uncontrolled fashion. Some of these cells form a tissue called a tumor. The tumor cells that do not invade other body parts and stay in the place where they formed is called a benign tumor and these are not cancerous. The one that invades other body parts is a malignant tumour and this is termed as cancer. These cancer cells show five properties. One is that they show continuous growth and division. If not diagnosed and treated it will reach everywhere. They avoid natural programmed cell death. As they are more in number they compete with normal cells to obtain vital nutrients and eventually kill them in the process. They also show angiogenesis which is the promotion of production of new blood vessels to get enough nutrients and oxygen. They also show metastasis which we discussed before(invasion to other body parts). Now let’s analyze the options to find out which one is not the property of cancer cells.
Option A) They show contact inhibition, which is wrong. This is a property which makes the cells grow into a thick single layer. But cancer will undergo uncontrollable growth and pile up to grow over each other. Therefore this is the correct option
Option B)Divide in an uncontrolled manner which is right. Therefore this is an incorrect option
Option C) Compete with normal cells for vital nutrients which are also right as we discussed above. Therefore this is an incorrect option
Option D) Do not remain in the area of formation which is also true for cancer cells(not for benign tumor). Therefore this is an incorrect option
Hence, the correct answer is option (A)
Note: There are five types of cancer.
Carcinomas that starts in the skin. Leukemia that starts in blood and bone marrow. Sarcoma that starts in bone fat muscles and other connective tissue. Lymphomas that starts in the immune system and Central nervous system cancer in the brain and spinal cord.
