Hint: Leukocytes are also known as white blood cells because they lack haemoglobin. These cells are well nucleated and are less in number. These cells are the immune cells that are present in blood.
Complete answer:
These white blood cells are divided into two categories, classified as granulocytes and agranulocytes. Neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils are granulocytes and monocytes and lymphocytes are agranulocytes. Granulocytes have granules present in their cytoplasm whereas agranulocytes lack any type of granules in their cytoplasm.
Option A- Eosinophil: These are types of disease fighting WBC. These cells prevent various parasitic infections in vertebrates and fight other infections too. These cells are 12- 17micrometer in diameter.
Option B- Basophil: Basophils make less than 1 percent of WBC. Low level of basophils is known as basopenia that indicates overactive thyroid gland or some allergies or infections. Size of a normal basophil is 14-16 micrometer. They have lots of deep blue staining granules.
Option C- Neutrophil: Its normal size is 12-14 micrometer and it looks bigger than other surrounding cells. These are the first cells to move to the infection site and kill the pathogens invading in our body. It has a single nucleus that is multilobed.
Option D- Monocyte: It is the largest cell of the blood with average size of 15-18 micrometer and they make upto 7 percent volume of the white blood cells. It has a big nucleus and helps in removal of dead, damaged tissues and fight against foreign substances.
Option E- T-Lymphocyte: Lymphocytes are of two types T and B lymphocytes. There are further types of T cells. Their size is approximately 5-7 micrometer in diameter thus these are the smallest in size in the WBCs.
So our answer is Monocytes are the largest type of leukocytes while lymphocytes are smallest in size.
Note:
A lymphocyte is part of the immune system. Two main types of lymphocytes are T and B lymphocytes. B lymphocytes produce antibodies against invading pathogens. T lymphocytes destroy their own cell of the body that has been infected by pathogens or become cancerous.
