Hint: This parasite infects around 35-50 million people worldwide. It kills about around 55,000 people each year.
Step by step answer:Entamoeba histolytica is an anaerobic parasite which is a major cause of diarrhoea in developing countries. It causes amoebiasis in humans and other primates. It also causes tissue destruction which leads to amoebiasis. It occurs in three stages which are as follows: direct host cell death, inflammation and parasite invasion. Life cycle of the parasite is categorised in two forms: cyst and trophozoite. Cyst is an infective form of parasite and non-motile, however trophozoite is a motile form of parasite. The cyst form is excreted in the feces where it can survive for weeks. At maturity the cyst is tetra-nucleate. A person can get infected either through cysts present in contaminated food or water, by person to person contact, swimming in contaminated water and in endemic areas.
Additional Information:The disease is diagnosed through microscopic examination for cyst in faecal samples, smears of aspirates or other tissue samples.
A blood test may give incorrect diagnosis as test results can be possible even if the patient has had amoebiasis in the past.
Note: The most common symptoms in amoebiasis include abdominal pain or bloody diarrhoea. The infected person may develop peritonitis. Severe amoebiasis can result in anemia due to loss of blood.
