The river flows through three states of India i.e. Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. when it comes to south India it is the third largest river after Godavari and Krishna and also it is the largest river in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The river rises at Talakaveri which is located in the Brahmagiri range in the western ghats in Kodagu district in Karnataka. The river is worshipped as Goddess Kaveriamma by the people of South India. The Kaveri is also known as one of the seven holy rivers of Indian. The Kaveri river drains into the Bay of Bengal.

The Kaveri river has many tributaries. Its left bank tributaries include - Harangi, Hemavati, Shimsha, Arkavathy. Its right bank tributaries include - Lakshmana, Tirtha, Kabini, Bhavani, Noyyal, Amaravati, Moyar.
