Chartism in Britain was a working-class male suffrage movement for political reform from 1830 to 1857. It was a national protest movement which derived its name from the People's Charter of 1838.Support for the movement was at its highest when petitions signed by millions of working people were presented to the House of Commons in 1839, 1842, and 1848.
Between 1837 and 1852, A chartist newspaper The Northern Star and Leeds General Advertiser was published in Britain , and best known for propagating the reform issues articulated and addressed by Feargus O'Connor who was an Irish Chartist leader with a charismatic leadership.
It was a weekly newsletter published in English and was founded on 18 November 1837. Despite the various attempts of O'Connor's protests about the tax restricted free speech, the newspaper had to pay a stamp duty of 4d. The paper drove a campaign in support of the working class who endured financially due to the presentation of new innovation and falling compensation or wages especially in reference to the handloom weavers.
In March 1840 for 18 months O'Connor with an aim to collapse the movement was detained for printing 'seditious libels' in the paper's, but the newspaper sold well during this time as well. The Northern Star was an innovative newspaper which aimed to cater to the reader of various regions hence was structured and tailored to suit the readers. The star newspaper's poetry column reflected the commitments of middle working-class people along with publishing the works of radical writers like Shakespeare or Shelley.

Note: The newspaper helped O' Conner to achieve the aims of the People's Charter as well as to achieve reform in the parliament. In the end of 1851 when the interest in the Chartist movement fell the Sales of the paper declined.The newspaper Northern Star was sold to Harney in April 1852.
