Matter is defined as the substance that has mass and occupies volume. A matter can be present in either solid, liquid or gaseous state.
Scientists have evolved two types of classification of matter based on their physical and chemical nature.
A matter is believed to be made up of particles which are very small in size and cannot be seen with naked eyes. These particles are moving continuously due to their kinetic energy. They have a force which keeps them together and their strength varies from one kind of matter to another.
A matter exists in different states namely solid, liquid and gas. The solid state has definite state, distinct boundaries and fixed volumes which means they have negligible compressibility. They are rigid.
Liquid states have no fixed shape but have a fixed volume. They take up the shape of the container in which they are kept. Since liquid flows and changes shape, they are not rigid but can be called fluid.
Gaseous state of the matter is in which they exist in gas form. They are highly compressible and the particles in the gaseous state move randomly at high speed.
