India is the largest producer 25% of the global production, consumer with 27% of world consumption and importer with 145% of pulses in the world.
Pulses are consumed as Dal, which is a cheap source of plant protein. These are consumed because of body building properties having presence of various amino acids. They also have the medicinal properties. A number of crops are grown in India and the world where mainly are Gram, Pigeon pea, Lentil, Field peas, etc.
Pulse crops are cultivated in Kharif, Rabi and Zaid seasons of the Agricultural year. Pulses are healthy, nutritious and easy to cook with. Growing pulses also promotes sustainable agriculture, as pulse crops help decrease greenhouse gases, increase soil health, and use less water than other crops.
Historically, Madhya Pradesh has been the major pulse producing state in the country. It ranked first both in terms of area and production of pulses in India. Over 20% of the gross cropped area of Madhya Pradesh is under pulses.
