Hint: The oxides which are going to form acids while dissolving in water are called acidic oxides and the oxides which are going to form base while dissolving in water are called basic oxides. The basic character of a metal oxide is going to depend on the metallic character of metal which is present in the metal oxide.
Complete answer:
- In the question it is asked to find basic oxides among the given metal oxides.
- Before going to find the basic character of the given metal oxides we should know a little information about the basic oxides.
- The metal which is going to have less oxidation state in its oxide form then the metal oxide is called basic oxide.
- The metallic character is also going to decrease while moving from left to right in the periodic table.
- Therefore, we have to find the metal oxide among the given metal oxides which is going to show less oxidation state for the metals.
- The metal oxides like ${{V}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}$ and $CrO$ are going to contain a metal which has less oxidation state.
- The oxidation state of the Vanadium in ${{V}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}$ is ‘+3’ and the oxidation state of the chromium in CrO is ‘+2’.
- So, the metal oxides which are highly basic in nature among the given chemicals are ${{V}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}$ and $CrO$.
Note:
Vanadium and chromium are not good metals in nature because they try to accept the electrons but the metals should have a property to donate the electrons. The reason behind the less metallic character for Vanadium and chromium is that metallic character is going to decrease while we are moving from left to right in the periodic table.
