Genes are considered as the fundamental unit for heredity. It is also related to the DNA which forms the main component of transmitting genetic information from generation to another.
Let us take one example. We know about plants. They are almost green in color and they have the tendency to synthesize the photosynthetic pigment known as chlorophyll. It can only be synthesized in the presence of light. This is because the gene which encoded for the chlorophyll is expressed only when the pigment interaction with light would occur. If the plant is placed in dark condition, so the gene which encodes for chlorophyll will try to stop its synthesizing.
