The Khilafat movement was started to support the Sultan of Turkey. Muslim population considered the Sultan as their Religious head in India. The Khilafat movement was started by two Ali brothers. The leaders of this movement were Mohammed Ali and Shaukat Ali - Maulana Azad, Hakim Ajmal Khan and Hasrat Mohani.

The three point programme was formed by the Khilafat Lists are as follows:
To defeat the Islamic faith, the Caliph must provide sufficient territory.
The Ottoman Caliph should retain his empire.
Arabia, Iraq, Syria and Palestine Arab lands must stay under the Muslim rule.

The impact of the Khilafat movement are given below:
Due to the movement people started to resign from the government services, the buying and selling of goods was put on hold.
On August 31 1921, the Khilafat Non – Cooperation Movement was started and in the year end 1920 the Khilafat Movement and the Congress Non – Cooperation movement merged into one nationwide movement.
The Khilafat Committee in the year 1921 sent a note to all the Muslims asking not to join police and armed forces and not to pay the taxes. On charges of sedition the Ali Brothers were arrested.


Note :The Khilafat day was observed on October 17, 1919. The Khilafat Movement was to persuade the British not to abolish the caliphate, and was launched by the Muslims in India. The Non –cooperation movement of Gandhiji was accepted by the leaders of the Khilafat movement and led the joint protest against British.
