Hint: The word ‘poly’ means multiple or more than one and the word ‘mer’ is associated with parts. Polymers are formed by the combination of multiple molecules either of the same type or different types.

Complete answer:
Polymers can also be considered as macromolecules and it is a combination of multiple subunits known as monomers. The word ‘mono’ means single. We can find polymers all around us. The naturally occurring polymer present in our body is the DNA strand and it is known as a biopolymer. Plastics which we use in daily life are also an example of polymers known as polypropylene.
Polymers can be of three types based on their source of availability:
- Natural Polymers: Natural polymers can be considered to be the ones which are found in animals and plants. The biopolymers are also natural polymers. Some examples are starch, proteins, rubber, cellulose.
- Semi-synthetic Polymers: When a natural polymer is subject to chemical modification, then the polymers formed as a result of these modifications are known as semi-synthetic polymers. For example cellulose acetate, cellulose nitrate.
- Synthetic Polymers: Synthetic polymers can also be called man-made polymers. These are the most common and widely used polymers. Plastic is the most common synthetic polymer. For example polyether, polyvinyl chloride, nylon-6,6 etc.
Let us see the formation of polyvinyl chloride.

Note:
Always remember that monomers are single units while polymers are multiple units. These monomers undergo chemical reaction or under heat combines to form polymers.
