It is a widespread mineral and is the ore of iron. It is mainly found in thin beds having shales, clay, or coal seams (as sedimentary deposits). It is also found in hydrothermal metallic veins in the form of gangue and waste rocks. It contains $ 48\% $ iron in it and does not contain sulfur or phosphorus. When we substitute zinc, magnesium and manganese with iron, it forms the solid solution of siderite-smithsonite, siderite-magnesite and siderite-rhodochrosite.

Some siderite along with goethite forms in big iron deposits. These two are small and economically minor. The formation of ironstones and banded iron formations are both sedimentary formations, Therefore, the economically viable deposits can become considerably thicker and much more extensive. Siderite is associated with many other ores and these ores are barite, fluorite, galena, and many more others. It is also anti-ferromagnetic but only below its Neel temperature and that is $ 37K $ . The shape of siderite is rhombohedral.
