Phantosmia is a disease which is related to the sense of smell. This disease occurs at the one side of the nose or sometimes at the two sides. The affected people have unpleasant feelings and smells disgusting odors.
The type of smells the people smelling are cigarette smell, burnt toast, burning rubber, chemical smell and stale smell. It may reduce appetite and weight loss. If the phantosmia affects the nose then it is called the peripheral phantosmia and if it affects the brain then it is called the central phantosmia.
This disease also causes nasal polyps, tumors, and chronic sinus infections, allergic and non allergic rhinitis. The cause of the brain affected by the phantosmia may result from epilepsy, head trauma, Parkinson's disease, depression and stroke also.

Phantosmia disease itself doesn't need any medical treatment. The disease gets worse when both noses sense the same smell. It may be analyzed by the affected people during day and night also. Parosmia and phantosmia are relatively the same. Parosmia is the smelling of real life smells but it is distorted. But common parosmia occurs for many of the people. Doing a physical exam on the neck and head will determine if the person is infected or not.
