Bushes or shrubs basically refer to small or medium-sized perennial woody plants. They have persistent woody stems or shoots. They can be distinguished from trees, as they have multiple stems and they grow up to a height of 6 to 10 meters.

Smaller shrubs may even be 2 meters tall. These are often called ‘subshrubs’. They can be differentiated from herbaceous plants because they have woody stems, whereas herbaceous plants or herbs have green non-woody stems. Most bushes do not have the main stem, rather they have many stems. This is because their stems begin the branch before even growing out of the ground level.

Sometimes they do have a trunk. But these trunks also grow up to very low heights before branching off. They branch off so close to the ground level that it seems as though the plant is multiple stemmed. The bushes also grow very dense foliage as their branches are very close to each other. Some examples of bushes are lavender, periwinkle, rose etc.
