An election is a certainty of appointing or being appointed. To elect indicates "to nominate or create a decision". A general election is a constitutional suffrage election where all or most of the members of a given administrative body are selected. These are standards held for a country, state, or province's fundamental legislative body, and are very much dissimilar from by-elections. Occasionally, general election duration within various administrative units, such as municipal elections, can coincide with election dates. The term general election in the United Kingdom frequently applies to elections to the House of Commons conducted on a common day in all constituencies of its Members of Parliament (MPs). General elections in U.S. elections are elections held at any level (e.g. city, county, congressional district, state) that normally require rivalry between at least two parties. Parliamentary systems fill positions that are prematurely vacated by the previous holder of the office.

Note: India's first General Election began on 25 October 1951 and lasted until 21 February 1952. For the Indian National Congress, it was a landslide victory and Jawaharlal Nehru became the first freely elected Prime Minister of India.
