Hint: In chemistry and phase equilibria, phase transition is a common phenomenon. There are many terms related to the phase transition. So, when the gaseous form of any substance changes to the solid form, it is known as decomposition. This process is the opposite phenomenon of the sublimation process.
Complete answer:
Deposition is a phase transfer or phase transition process (the change in the physical state of a substance). So, we can define the deposition process as a process in which a substance which is present in gaseous state changes directly to the solid state (the gaseous substance gets deposited in the solid physical state).
Let us now take an example of carbon dioxide and understand through a reaction:
It is initially present in the gaseous state and when it gets directly converted to solid state without being in the liquid state, this process is known as deposition.
This process is a physical process.
Some other examples of deposition is sub-freezing of air in which water vapour (gaseous form) directly changes to ice (solid form). And through this process frost forms on the surface of ground.
Note:
This process is the opposite process of sublimation because in the sublimation process the compound which is present in the solid state directly converts into the gaseous physical state without getting converted into the liquid state. Sublimation process is also a phase transition of the phase transfer process. So, we can say that it is also a physical process.
