Hint: Assume the given expression as y. Now, we will describe the expression on the basis of types of equations by checking the degree of the variable present in the expression. Also, we will see its graph and the curve it represents by tracing the path on the Cartesian plane. We will also classify it on the basis of the number of terms present like monomial, binomial or polynomial.
Complete step by step solution:
Here we have been provided with the expression 5x + 8 and we are asked to describe it. Let us describe this expression on various bases like number of terms, nature of the expression and its curve etc.
Let us assume the expression as y so we have,
$\Rightarrow y=5x+8$
Now, we can see that the above equation is of the form $y=mx+c$ which is the slope – intercept form of a straight line. Here m is the slope of the line and c is its y – intercept. So, comparing the above relation with the slope intercept form we will get the slope of the line $y=5x+8$ as m = 5 and y – intercept as c = 8. So the graph of this will be straight in nature which can be shown below: -
Also, we can conclude that the degree of the equation is 1 because the highest exponent of the variable x is 1. Now, we can see that in 5x + 8 we have two terms: one containing the variable x and the other a constant term, so we can say that this expression is a binomial expression.
Note: Note that if the highest exponent of the variable x in an equation is 2 then it is called quadratic equation whose graph is a parabola, similarly for degree 3 the equation is known as cubic equation and for degree 4 the name bi – quadratic equation is used. If there is a single term then it is called monomial, for two terms it is called binomial and for more than two terms it is called polynomial.
