Complete answer: -Umabai Kundapura played a significant role in India’s freedom struggle and served the nation for nearly 50 years. She established the ‘Bhagini Mandal’ and was also the head of the women’s wing of Hindustani Seva Dal.
-Umabai Kundapura’s original name was Bhavani Golikeri and was born to Golikeri Krishna Rao and Jungabai in Mangalore in 1892. On 1 November 2014, the city was officially renamed to "Mangaluru" by the Karnataka government.
-At a young age of 13, she was married to Sanjiv Rao Kundapur. Her father-in-law Anandarao Kundapur was a liberal thinker and believed in improving the condition of women. It was under his guidance that Umabai continued her studies.
-At the age of 25, Umabai lost her husband.
-She joined the Karnataka press started by her father-in-law.
-She also led the “Tilak Kanya Shala”, a school for girls.
-With the help of “Gaundevi Mahila Samaj” in Mumbai, Umabai was able to help other women to learn and get educated.
-In 1924, she helped Dr Hardikar, the founder Hindustani Seva Dal, in the enrolment of over 150 women to help in the Belgaum session of the All India Congress. In 1932, she got jailed for 4 months in Yerwada. While she was in jail, her school was sealed and her NGO ‘Bhagini Mandal’ was declared as unlawful by the British confiscated Karnataka Press.
-Sarojini Naidu supported her and suggested her to stay away from the limelight. Later, she became the agent of the “Kasturba Trust”.

Note: -Umabai Kundapura was influenced by the nationalist beliefs of Gandhiji and Hardaker.
-To carry the message of swadeshi and its importance, she wrote a drama in Marathi named ‘Swadeshi Vrath.’
