It is given that Tom pays the below amount of money every month:

Currently he owes his friend:
Amount $=Rs.2500$……$\left( 2 \right)$
(a) We have to find the amount of money Tom will owe to his friend after three months.
So firstly we will find amount of money Tom will return in these three months by multiplying the value in equation (1) by 3 as follows:
Amount he pays in three months $=Rs.400\times 3$
Amount he pays in three months $=Rs.1200$
Now to find amount of money he owes to his friend after three month we will subtract above value from equation (2) as follows:
Amount of money he owes after three months $=Rs.2500-Rs.1200$
Amount of money he owes after three months $=Rs.1300$
(b) Next we have to find the total money Tom borrowed from his friend.
So firstly we will find the total money he gave to his friend in 7 months as below:
Amount he paid in three months $=Rs.400\times 7$
Amount he paid in three months $=Rs.2800$
Now we will add the money he paid in seven month and money he still owes him from equation (2) as follows:
Total money borrowed $=Rs.2500+Rs.2800$

Note: In this type of question we have to read the statement properly otherwise we can form a wrong equation and get a different answer. As it is asked after three month how much money Tom owes so for that we have to subtract the amount and for total money borrowed we will add the amount he paid for the last seven months.
