Durga Charan Ray’s novel ‘Debanger Martye Aagaman’(the god visits earth) basically explains the two contrasting images of the city of Calcutta. It explains how when Lord Brahma travels the city he is amused to see and witness the routine of a city life. The novel shows positive as well as negative aspects of Calcutta.
Positive- The simple city is changed into a modern metro city featuring big markets having big shops with a variety of commodities. The old bullock cart is replaced by a variety of means of transport such as water ways of river,airways and railways. There developed a high Court gradually and a remarkable museum. There was a flourishing trade and commerce going on.Schools,colleges for education and a variety of job opportunities were also present.
Besidesthese features the city changed a lot. There were anti-social activities like theft and cheating was also growing. There was a visible gap between rich and poor. The development also had side effects on the environment.Problems of sanitation and hygiene were also there. There was distinction on the basis of caste,creed and gender-the predominant features of Hindu society were in a changed position.The city was in a transitional stage.
