Karnataka is a state located in India’s southwestern region. It is the sixth-largest state in India and the largest state in South India. It is bordered by the states of Goa to the northwest, Maharashtra to the north, Telangana to the northeast, Tamil Nadu to the southeast, Kerala to the south and by the Arabian Sea to the west. The state stretches for about 675 km from north to south and for about 480 km from east to west. Its coastline stretches for some 320 km and is the only southern state to share land borders with all of the other 4 sister states of southern India.

The state was created on 1 November 1956, with the passage of the States Reorganisation Act. It was initially named the State of Mysore, but it was renamed ‘Karnataka’ in 1973. Bengaluru (Bangalore) is the capital and also the largest city of the state. It has an area of 709 sq. Km.

Note: The state comprises of three principal geographical zones:
- The coastal region of Tulu Nadu and Karavali.
- The hilly region of Malenadu consists of the Western Ghats.
- The Bayaluseeme region consists of the Deccan Plateau plains.
- The Bayaluseeme region comprises the bulk of the state. Its northern part is the second-largest arid region in India.
