Complete step by step solution:
The third Anglo-Maratha War took place in 1817-1818 and is considered to be the last war fought between the Marathas and the British East India Company. The war was fought in Maharashtra. The chief reason for this war was the British conflict with the Pindaris whom the British suspected were being protected by the Marathas.

The main reasons for the loss of Maratha Empire in this war were:
 i) Lack of unity among the Maratha chiefs themselves.
ii) Lack of good relations with other Indian princes and ruling dynasties.
iii) Failure to understand the British political and diplomatic strengths

After this war, the company acquired control on most parts of India. Pindaris, a group of Muslims and Marathas from central India also fought the war. Governor General Hastings led the troop which was supported by General Thomas Hislop. The Peshwa was also defeated in the battle of Khadki and Koregaon. After this war, the Maratha independence was lost.

Hence, the correct answer is option A.

Note:
The war adversely affected the Marathas as all of the Maratha powers had surrendered to the British. There had been other Anglo-Maratha that were fought such as the First Anglo-Maratha War(1775–82) and Second Anglo Maratha War(1803–05). After this war, The Treaty of Mandsaur was signed between the British and the Holkar chief in 1818. An infant was placed on the throne under British guardianship.
