Democritus used the atoms and voids terms to explain the concept of the universe. Initially atoms were thought to be indivisible and it was thought that there are large empty spaces inside the atom known as voids. Atoms are infinite in number; they are physically indivisible but not geometrically. He emphasised on the concept that everything in the universe is connected with the one big and unchangeable thing. Initially other philosophers did not agree with his views and took his concepts and perceptions very lightly in a casual way.
He further extended his theory putting forth the view that the atoms come in different sizes, shapes and mass and these are the differentiating properties of the atoms. The properties like colour and taste are not related with the properties of the atom and they are not the main part of the theory he suggested. Thus the main points in put forth in his theory are:

The first complete attempt to explain the concept of matter in terms of atoms and their properties was made by Dalton.
