Hint: The question here refers to something that goes close to the sun very rarely as if it was talking about planets then it is very much evident that planets revolve around the sin and not back and forth.

Complete answer:
The answer to this question lies in the cold far reaches of our solar system. It lies in the small chunk of dust and ice which are nearly invisible unless it gets closer to the sun. These small masses of ice begin to sublimate as it begins to heat up and changes from solid to gas with no liquid stage.

When these masses move closer to the sun with high speed, it interacts with an outward stream. This stream is the constant flow of particles (electrons and protons) that streams outward of the sun. This stream causes the ball of masses to form a tail-like structure at its end and there are generally two types of tails – the dust tail and the plasma tail. And as these structures move close to the sun, they lose their materials more rapidly and lose almost \[1\%\] of its mass as it gets closer to the sun. This ball of mass is called a comet.

Hence, the size of a comet increases as it moves toward the Sun.

Note:When the earth passes through the path of such a comet, we witness the meteor shower of the dust of the tail that the comet left behind while moving close to the sun. When such particles enter the earth’s atmosphere, they start to burn up.
