Hint: Each brick is attached with other brick using a mortar mix, which is formed by mixing of cement and sand, in this question we are given that vol ratio of cement to sand is 1:3 and vol of the mortar used is 0.24\[{{m}^{3}}\], considering vol of cement be x means vol of sand will be 3x, total vol is 0.24, \[x+3x=0.24\] so \[x=0.06\], vol of sand will be 3x means $0.18{m^3}$

Complete step-by-step solution:
We are given that the ratio of cement to sand for the mortar mix in the joints is 1:3.to lay 1000 bricks, 0.24 \[{{m}^{3}}\] of mortar mix is needed to find the volume of sand required to make the mortar to lay 1000 bricks, so first we assume that volume of cement be x so it means vol of sand will be 3x and total vol is given as 0.24\[{{m}^{3}}\] So, we can write a mathematical expression of the sum of volumes of cement and sand will be 0.24m3
\[x+3x=0.24\] on solving gives \[4x=0.24\] further solving gives value of \[x=0.06\]
And we just have to find the volume of sand which is 3x,
So, putting the value of \[x=0.06\] vol into 3x we get volume as \[3\times 0.06=0.18\]
Hence, we got the vol of sand will be \[0.18\]\[{{m}^{3}}\] and similarly vol of cement will be 0.06\[{{m}^{3}}\]

Note: Most of the students have doubt that we don’t consider the line ‘1000 bricks’ anywhere in the answer, it is because it doesn’t matter, as the volume of mortar given as 0.024\[{{m}^{3}}\] is already given at 1000 bricks and we have asked volume of sand is also at 1000 bricks so we don’t have to multiply our answer with 1000.
