The place Hassan gets its name from Hasanamba Temple. This is a Hindu temple which is in the city of Hassan. The temple is devoted to Maa Amba who is also known as Goddess of Shakti. The temple was constructed in the 12th century and it opens once a year on the festival of Diwali for the people to visit and seek the blessings of Maa Amba.

For the rest of the year, the temple is closed with a lighted diya of ghee in front of Goddess that burns for the whole year and with two bags of rice, some water and flowers. It is said that once seven Goddesses (Brahmi, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Indrani, Chamundi, Vyshnavi and Varahi) came to visit the city of Hassan.
