Hint: The menstrual cycle takes place in human females. It is a natural process which takes place in the female reproductive stages. It ensures the production of eggs and also prepares the uterus for pregnancy. The walls of the uterus prepare itself for implantation of the fertilised egg.

Complete answer:
The menstrual cycle consists of four phases.
1)Menstrual Phase- In this phage the lining of the uterus is shed. It is termed as day 1 of the period which lasts for 3-7 days. The discharge comprises blood, endometrial cells and mucus.

2)Follicular Phase- The ovary produces follicles which comprises immature eggs. This matures into an egg or ovum. It stimulates the uterus for the preparation of pregnancy by thickening the walls of the uterus.

3)Luteal phase- It begins after ovulation. It lasts for about 14 days and ends just before the onset of the period. In this luteal phase, the ruptured follicles close after the eggs are released and form corpus luteum which produces progesterone.

4)Ovulatory phase- It is the phase when ovulation takes place. Ovulation is the process of release of egg from the ovary. It generally occurs in the mid cycle i.e. 13-17 days. The egg then moves to the fallopian tube for fertilisation.

Hence, the correct answer is option (D)

Note: The hormones control the menstrual cycle. The important hormones which regulate the menstrual cycle are follicle stimulating hormone (stimulates ovary to produce follicles), luteinizing hormone which triggers ovulation, estrogen which promotes the thickening to the uterus lining, progesterone for maintaining the thickening of the uterus lining and maintaining healthy pregnancy. These hormones are triggered by hypothalamus and pituitary.
