Hint: Corpus luteum is a hormone that is present in the ovary and is responsible for producing hormone progesterone during early pregnancy. It plays a major role in the formation of zygote. Occurrence of cyst may lead to failure in pregnancy.
Complete answer:
During ovulation, an egg is released from a dominant follicle. When the egg is released and it is fertilized, the follicles get sealed and form a thick layer which is called corpus luteum. corpus luteum produces progesterone during early pregnancy.
The corpus continues to produce progesterone until the foetus is strong enough to survive on its own till at least 7-9 weeks. Human chorionic gonadotropin is the hormone also called as embryonic hormone which helps in production of progesterone. the size of the corpus luteum decreases by 10 the week of pregnancy. Then the placenta takes over the production of progesterone. If the egg is not fertilized the corpus luteum stops secreting progesterone and degenerates to corpus albicans leading to menstruation cycle.
So, here the correct option would be option A. Chorionic gonadotropic hormone.
Note:
Role of progesterone in pregnancy.
1. It helps the uterus to grow without any contraction.
2. Gives support to the lining of the uterus.
3. Helps in improving blood flow and oxygen supply.
