It is situated at the union of the Mahanadi river and the Bay of Bengal. It is situated between 200-300 miles from Kolkata and Visakhapatnam. Major Ports of India include Paradip Sea Port since 1966. The Foundation of Paradip Sea Port was laid by then Prime Minister of India, Late Jawahar Lal Nehru. However, the founding father of the port was the then Chief Minister of Odisha, Late Biju Patnaik. It was 3rd January 1962, when the foundation was laid down by Late Jawahar Lal Nehru near the union of the river Mahanadi and the Bay of Bengal. Although it took three years for the Government of India to take over the management of the Port from the Government of Odisha on 1 June 1965. INS "Investigator" had the privilege of inaugurating the Port on 12 March 1966 and was declared open by the then Prime Minister of Yugoslavia, Late Peter Stambolic on the same day.
