Core: It is the Earth's innermost layer. The very hot, very dense centre of our world is the Earth's nucleus. Under the cool, brittle crust and the mostly-solid mantle lies the ball-shaped heart. The heart is located about 2,900 kilometres (1,802 miles) below the surface of the Earth and has a radius of about 2,165 miles (3,485 kilometres).

For three major reasons, the Earth's core is important:

(1) it is responsible for producing the magnetic field of the Earth; (2) it provides knowledge about the planet's earliest history of accretion; and (3) thermal and compositional characteristics developed when the core formed largely dominated the core's subsequent evolution and also influenced the evolution of the mantle, crust, and atmosphere.
