- All of us have hormones in our body. Hormones are the chemicals which function as messenger molecules in our body. They migrate to other areas of our body after being produced in one part of our body. The human body requires a very limited range of blood glucose preserved. Insulin makes this possible.
- So, the stimulus for insulin secretion is high blood glucose. Insulin is generated in the pancreas and is synthesised within the beta-cells of the Langerhans islets.
- Insulin gets produced and synthesised inside the pancreas. Hence known as pancreatic endocrine hormones. Langerhans islets are the regions of the pancreas which contain hormone-producing cells.
- The pancreatic islets produce hormones which regulate blood glucose levels. Five different types of cells secrete hormones generated on the pancreatic islets directly into the bloodstream. They are irregular patches of endocrine tissue found inside the most vertebrate pancreas.
- The islets are made up of four distinct types of cells, three of which alpha, beta, and delta produce essential hormones. The beta-cell that produces insulin is the most popular islet cell.
- The causes of diabetes mellitus are the inability of the islet cells to manufacture insulin or the failure to generate quantities necessary to regulate blood glucose levels.
