Poona pact was an agreement between Dr BR Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi which was signed on Sep 24, 1932 at central jail in Pune. This was to break Mahatma Gandhi fast unto death. Poona pact was a result of a communal award granted in 1932 by Britishers. Mahatma Gandhi was against the provision to provide separate electorates for scheduled caste. According to him this would separate them from the whole Hindu community. Yerawada jail is a high security jail, it is located in Pune in Maharashtra. Gandhiji considered it as rule policy as it would separate them from whole hindu society. his health was deteriorating therefore everyone was asking him to stop fasting. The agreement was signed under mango trees. Ambedkar was convinced to leave his support for separate electorates until Gandhiji was near death. The pact was that there would be more representation of Dalits but no separate electorates were to be made. This pact was the beginning of movement against untouchability.
