Option C – Kolkata is the headquarter of the Metro Railway Zone who is the owner as well as the operator of Kolkata Metro which is the oldest metro system in India. In the year 1969, a Metropolitan Transport Project was proposed under the Indian Railways in order to build this project and in the year 1971 it was also proposed to set up 5 transit lines in Kolkata. The Soviet specialists as well as the East German engineers prepared the outline of the project for the metro lines of Kolkata with a route length of 97.5 kilometers.
In the year 2008 the Government of India formed Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation in order to oversee the implementation of the Kolkata Metro Line 2 which is also referred to as the East West Metro which connects Kolkata and Howrah known as the Twin Cities. In the beginning this enterprise was a joint venture of the Government of West Bengal and Government of India with 50 percent partnership for each but in the year 2010 it the Government of West Bengal withdrew its shares and gave it to the Ministry of Railways and now the Government of India holds its share along with the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
