The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) is also known as Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, the Rio Summit, the Rio Conference, and the Earth Summit. It was one of the major United Nations Conferences. Issues addressed in the conference were:-
1. Patterns of production of toxic components
2. Use of alternative sources of energy in place of fossil fuels
3. Increase the use of the public transportation system to reduce air pollution
4. Proper use of water as it is also available in limited quantity
Important agreements signed in the summit were the Kyoto Protocol, the Paris Agreement and not to carry out any activities on the lands of indigenous peoples that would cause environmental degradation. UNCED increased the participation of non – governmental organizations (NGOs), non-state actors, and civil society in the sustainable development of a country. There were more than 35,000 participants in the conference out of which 100 were heads of different states, 1400 were NGOs and 800 were journalists.
Twelve cities were awarded the local government honors award for innovative local environmental programs. Some of them are- Sadbury of Canada, Austin of the United States, and Kitakyushu of Japan.
