Iron is extracted from the iron ore in a huge container called a blast furnace. Iron ores like hematite contain iron(III) oxide, ${Fe_2}O_3$. The oxygen is removed from iron(III) oxide which leaves behind an iron. Reactions in which the oxygen is removed are called reduction reactions.
Carbon is more reactive than the iron, so it displaces iron from the iron(III) oxide. In this reaction, the iron(III) oxide is reduced to iron, and the carbon is oxidized to carbon dioxide. In blast furnace, it is very hot that the carbon monoxide can be used, in place of the carbon, to reduce iron(III) oxide.
