In 1854, Dr. Fredrick John who was the education secretary for the British government proposed the plan to establish an educational institution in India in the similar structural and functioning aspects of London University. A dispatch known as wood’s dispatch was sent to the Governor General of India in council to initiate the process of building universities in Calcutta, Bombay and Madras. The Calcutta University act was brought into action in 1857 alongside a senate of 41 members were selected as the policy making body of the university.
During the time when the university was first established, it was under the jurisdiction of Lahore to Rangoon and Ceylon, which made it to be the largest of any Indian university. Calcutta University became the first university to establish departments of European classics, English literature, European and Indian philosophy and Occidental and Oriental history in the eastern region of Suez. The first medical school in Asia, known as the Calcutta Medical College and the first college for women, Bethune college are also affiliated with the university since 1857. Governor General Lord Canning and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Sir William Colville became the first chancellor and vice-chancellor of the Calcutta University.
Note:14 campuses are present under Kolkata university which spread over the city of Kolkata and its suburbs referred to as Sikhsa Prangan,( education premises).Major campuses include the Central Campus ,a Science College in Rajabazar, Taraknath Palit Shiksha Prangan in Ballygunge and Sahid Khudiram Siksha Prangan in Alipore. 151 colleges and 21 institutes and centres are affiliated with it. And the university holds rank 7 in the Indian University Ranking 2020.
