Hint: The English and the French both wanted to establish their dominion over India and wanted to control the trade and political power in India which resulted in three Carnatic Wars.

Complete answer: The Battle of Wandiwash was an attempt by French forces to conquer the fort of Vandavasi, present Tamil Nadu. This attempt was spoilt by the British forces which led to the Battle of Wandiwash or Third Carnatic War. In 1756, the Seven Years(1756-1763) War broke out in Europe between France, Austria, Saxony, Sweden and Russia and once again France and England were against each other. No major engagements took place between each other until 1757. In 1757, the British captured Chandannagar and three years later crushed the French army. The French under the leadership of Count De Lally attacked St George Fort and attacked English to acquire Madras, but he was defeated by English forces under Sir Eyre Coote in the Battle of Wandiwash in 1760. The French lost their Indian conquests including Pondicherry, Mahe, Gingee and Karaikal to the British. The war ended and as a result, the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1763. According to the treaty, Chandannagar and Pondicherry were returned to France but they were barred from fortifying them or having troops. They were allowed to have trading activities in India. The Third Carnatic War ended the hopes of French people of ruling India.
Therefore, option D is the correct answer.

Note: With the end of the Carnatic war, the hopes of the French of building an empire in India ended and the British were established as the supreme European power in India. It also paved the way for the establishment of a British colonial rule in India.
