Hint: We know that there are three lists in the seventh schedule of the constitution of India, namely Union list, State list and Concurrent list

Complete answer:
Out of the three lists given in the Constitution, the matters under concurrent list are the only ones which can be legislated by both Central and State governments.
The Concurrent list includes subjects like Education including Technical education, Medical education and Universities, Population control and Family Planning, Criminal law, Prevention of cruelty to animals, protection of wildlife and animals, forests etc.
The Concurrent list initially had 47 subjects but through the 42nd Amendment Act of 1976 Five more subjects were transferred from State to Concurrent List.
Since we know that this is a very important part of the constitution, let us have a brief look at what each of the three lists consist of.
The union list includes matters of national concern and includes subjects like Defence, Railway, Nuclear Power, Army, International Relations etc.
Moving on to the State list, we know that the matters of regional and local importance and the matters which permits diversity of interest are specified in the State List; which includes subjects like- Public order, police, health etc.
Therefore option ‘(a) 52’ is the correct solution.

Note: We need to remember that the Union list has 98 subjects, the State list has 61 subjects and the Concurrent list has 52 subjects.
