Hint:
Green plants prepare their food by photosynthesis. In photosynthesis, glucose is formed which gets stored as starch in storage foods.
Complete step by step answer:
In photosynthesis, the following reaction is followed for the formation of glucose.
\[{\text{6C}}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}{\text{ + 6}}{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}{\text{O }}\xrightarrow{{{\text{light}}}}{\text{ }}{{\text{C}}_{\text{6}}}{{\text{H}}_{{\text{12}}}}{{\text{O}}_{\text{6}}}{\text{ + }}\,{\text{6}}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\]
From the chemical reaction of photosynthesis six molecules of carbon dioxide react with the six molecules of water to glucose compounds and also form six molecules of oxygen.
As we can see that only carbon dioxide is processed further for the production of glucose.
Carbon dioxide provides carbon which is used to make glucose which makes ATP as well as the plant body. This process is increasing the percentage of oxygen levels which are present in the environment and it is essential for all living organisms for the respiration process.
Additional information:
-The major mass constituent of plants is carbon.
-The photosynthesis reaction is opposite to cellular respiration.
-The byproduct i.e. oxygen is obtained from water molecules rather than carbon dioxide.
-A glucose molecule has 6 carbon atoms that’s why 6 molecules of carbon dioxide are required to form one molecule of glucose.
Note:Photosynthesis is a two step reaction: first step is absorption of light and get some electron in excited state so that they help in splitting of water molecule and the second step is synthesis part (Calvin Cycle)
Plants absorb carbon dioxide through leaf stomata which reacts with water to form glucose.
