The tribe of Gonds lived in a very wide forested area which was called Gondwana, otherwise known as "a land inhabited by Gonds." They practised shifting cultivation for a living. The great tribe of the Gond was further divided into many smaller clans. Each clan had a raja or a raja of its own. While the power of the Delhi Sultans was declining, a few of the large Gond kingdoms were starting to dominate the smaller Gond chiefs. Akbar Nama was the history of Akbar's reign. It mentions the Gond kingdom of Garha Katanga, which had almost 70,000 villages.

The administrative system of these kingdoms has become centralised. The kingdom has been divided into garhs. Each garh was under the control of a particular Gond clan. It was further divided into units of 84 villages called the Chaurasi. The chaurasi was subdivided into baroque villages made up of 12 villages each. The emergence of large states has changed the nature of Gond society. Their essentially equal society was gradually divided into unequal social classes.
