The Royal Observatory, Greenwich, is an observatory on a hill overlooking the River Thames in Greenwich Park. It has played a significant role in the history of astronomy and navigation, and it has given its name to Greenwich Mean Time since the prime meridian passes through it.

In 1675, with the foundation stone being laid on 10 August, King Charles II commissioned the observatory. Sir Christopher Wren selected the site.The king also established the position of Astronomer Royal at that time, serving as the observatory director and "applying" himself to the rectification of the tables of the movements of the heavens and the places of the fixed stars with the most precise care and diligence, in order to find out the longitude of places so desired to perfect the perfection of the heavens."
